Big Data as a Service – The xth wonder of the world

Big Data and more specifically, Big Data as a Service is the concept that changed the world. That’s for sure. The amount of data that we are exchanging or storing is truly impressive, and what’s most dazzling is that we’ve found the way to handle it. We just need to take a look at some facts and figures to realize how far technology as come, and predict its even greater evolution in the years to come.

Today’s facts:

  • 2.7 Zetabytes of data “breath” in the digital universe
  • Facebook, alone, stores, accesses and analyzes 30+ Petabytes of user generated data
  • Walmart’s customer database contains more than 2.5 Petabytes of data
  • One of AT&T’s database shelters 312 terabytes of data

How Big Data works?

In one of my previous articles, The Big Data and its superpowers, I talked about how this approach would leverage your business by allowing you to predict the future of your business. We already know that Big Data can influence your business and make predictions about your customer behavior, how they interact with your product or services, even identify their pain points and solve them. However, leaving this plethora of advantages aside, there is much more about Big Data.

The popularity that made Big Data thrive and the evolving trends from the past years, lead to an even more exciting concept – Big Data as a Service or BDaaS.

Big Data as a Service has emerged from two fundamental IT concepts: Cloud Computing, and, of course, Big Data. Naturally, cloud computing and Big Data are a match made in heaven, and it was just a matter of time until the two merged.

Big Data as A Service is composed of numerous layers that make the magic happen, and here they are:

  • Analytics Layer – Analytics software as a service (ASaaS)
  • Execution Layer – Data platform as a service (DPaaS)
  • Integration Layer – Database as a service (DBaaS), and Data as a service DaaS
  • Cloud Infrastructure Layer – Compute as a service (CaaS) and Storage as a service (StaaS)

Each and one of the “as-a-service” offerings play their vital part in the landscape that we call Big Data as a Service.

Big Data as a Service business models

The rise of BDaaS has created new business models, that can be adjusted for any business according to its needs, requirements, and expectations.

  • Core BDaaS – This business model is usually used for irregular workloads that implement the minimal platform, such as Hadoop and some of the most widespread services, including AWS. Companies are using this business model to build data pipelines or even infrastructures.
  • Performance BDaaS – Just like the name suggests, this business model provides increased performance. It’s the perfect model to use if your business requires improved scalability of you are challenged by an increased level of complexity.
  • Feature BDaaS Delivering innovative features, this model focuses on productivity and helps your business adapt to the Big Data environment.  Because it is independent of any cloud provider, the BDaaS model enables your business to scale up and down according to your needs.
  • Integrated BDaaS – This model business is a hybrid business model that combines all the benefits of the performance BDaaS and Feature BDaaS. It’s probably the most tempting approach to use since it provides both productivity and performance.

Since now you know the business models that Big Data as a Service offers, which one would you choose for your business?
