Amazing use of cloud computing and IoT

ID-10079113The Internet of Things is “exploding”, and it’s not hard to explain why it’s happening now. The sensors, networking chips and other technology required to connect to the Internet devices have all become inexpensive, varying from light bulbs to smartwatches to industrial equipment.

These connected “things” send and receive data through the network relating to a variety of physical characteristics – temperature, pulse rate, light level, velocity or revolutions per minute – as well as more complex data such as maintenance requirements, sounds, and static or moving images.

So let’s take a look at three of the most amazing applications of cloud computing and IoT that will possibly change humanity as we know it:

  • Identify disease breakouts

Big Data is basically an enormous amount of data generated through a specific application or website. You can now find out what makes your customers react and what action to take, from websites that generate a tremendous amount of data every second. In this same way, you can now take data from say a specific population or demographic and find out inconsistencies, or data points that can help identify things such as a disease outbreak. Just a few years back Google made the headlines for being able to pinpoint the outbreak of flu, in real time, using data received in its search engine search. Imagine predicting an Ebola outbreak or the plague.

  • Live translation breaking down the barriers

Believe it or not, you can now speak to your long estranged relatives in their language and yet have no need to learn it. Live translation technology – currently being pushed out by technology companies like Microsoft and Google – is the ability to translate speech from one language to another while being spoken. Live translation is going to be revolutionary as it breaks down barriers between countries and people. With no communication gaps, humans will have the ability to do more and communicate effectively. Also, this technology would open more doors for people to understand each other, and maybe lead to increased trade, commerce and cultural exchanges worldwide.

  • Sensors monitoring water quality in rivers, lakes and the sea

Libelium launched a Smart Water wireless sensor platform to simplify remote water quality monitoring. Equipped with multiple sensors that measure a dozen of the most relevant water quality parameters, we are talking about the first water quality-sensing platform to feature autonomous nodes that connect to the cloud for real-time water control. The application is suitable for potable water monitoring, chemical leakage detection in rivers, remote measurement of swimming pools and spas, and levels of seawater pollution. Imagine the possibilities.

Needless to say that the current hype around the Internet of Things is huge, and it seems like every day a new company announces some IoT enabled product. Are you ready for what’s next?
