What’s the difference between a Cloud Server and a Dedicated Server

What’s the difference between a Cloud Server and a Dedicated Server

More and more companies are faced with the problem of choosing between traditional/dedicated servers and cloud servers. Before making a decision, it is important to understand the differences between the two servers so you will know that you are making the best decision that meets all of your company’s specific server needs.

Cloud Servers

Cloud servers are normally deployed on high end hardware and use virtualization to allow many virtual computers to run on that hardware.  In just a few minutes the cloud server can be deployed and configured. With cloud, it is very simple to scale and resize the server which will give you the ability to easily and quickly add or remove memory, computing power, and hard drive space that is customized to the application and data requirements of your applications you are running on that cloud server.  Cloud Servers can easily be backed up and moved between data centers.  Cloud server management is built into the Cloud software so monitoring and patching is more efficient.

Dedicated Servers

The deployment of a dedicated server is in most cases time-consuming and needs a considerable amount of work. You have to choose and install the hardware, the software,  the operating system and applications. The entire installation process can take days or even weeks.

A dedicated server requires a set-up fee and a monthly or annual contract. It can also be challenging to add and remove resources which can result in significant downtime. As well, upgrading a dedicated server requires building a new server and going through the entire installation process. Dedicated Servers require third party tools for monitoring and backup.

The time for the traditional dedicated server is almost over. New cloud computing technologies deliver more performance and behave exactly like a dedicated server. Cloud servers are more reliable, scalable, offer more management features, and cost less. If your dedicated server or servers are getting old I recommend you to take into consideration migrating to the cloud. Cloud migration doesn’t have to be hard or expensive. And it will bring your company efficiency, money savings, productivity and resilience.

as for me dedicated servers are more reliable as you have more control over them, although they can be more expensive. I don’t mind new technologies at all. For example, I am trying to use popular monitoring tool e.g Anturis to see how my servers and network works, but I am still in doubts about cloud servers.

Many of the benefits mentioned for cloud servers can also be realized using virtualization on local high end servers. Using remote cloud servers is a mixed blessing – while you save on hardware and facilities costs, your access is over a WAN instead of a LAN, and if the datacenter hosting your cloud server has an outage, there isn’t much you can do about it.

of course we see only advantages of cloud servers on a site dedicated to… cloud servers.
it’s very irritating that when a new technology comes everything that was before is no longer good. the new technology has only advantages and the old one only disadvantages.
how could a cloud server deliver a big amount of data when a local server almost is able to. we have dynamics ax and it couldn’t work on a virtualised server because they told us that it needs more computing power, which was limitated on memory.
so, how could we erase tens of thousands of euros investment and go to cloud ?
